Field Organizer
Higher Education

Based in Ithaca, NY

UE seeks a union representative to join our national staff for a higher education assignment. UE is an independent member-run union with a nationwide membership and a proud history of progressive political action and aggressive struggle to improve workplace conditions. The position involves bargaining, local union leadership development, internal organizing, and grievance handling for bargaining units in the higher education sector.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with contract negotiations
  • Developing and maintaining workplace leadership structures
  • Training members, stewards, and rank -and-file local officers
  • Building escalating issue campaigns in the workplace
  • Assisting UE local unions with grievance handling 
  • Developing coalition and political action work
  • Assisting with new organizing campaigns
  • Handling grievance arbitrations
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to rank-and-file leadership development.
  • Effective communication skills – listening, spoken, and written
  • Ability to maintain accurate information on worksite site and campaign activities
  • Strong analytical skills 
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision; must be well organized and self-motivated.
  • Capacity to establish and cultivate relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience as a union representative and/or organizer preferred.

The salary for this position is $66,020.22 per year as of December 1, 2025. Irregular hours, travel, and weekend work are an essential part of the job. Benefits include excellent health care and retirement benefits and a substantial car allowance (must have own car for travel).
